It is that time of year again. Along with sun-filled days and time outside with friends and family, early summer also brings with it APCC’s Summer Appeal. While no one enjoys asking for money, the hard truth is that the job of speaking for the Cape’s environment has never been more complex, demanding, and expensive.
The Cape’s air, land and water are under unrelenting pressure. The evidence is all around us. One need look no further than the ponds experiencing cyanobacteria blooms, the 90 percent of our estuaries that fail to meet state and federal water quality standards, the development patterns that have chopped up habitat, and degraded and shrinking wetland resources. In the face of these problems, it would be easy to turn away from the challenge and enjoy what remains, until it, too, is gone. But we here at APCC can’t turn away.
For every major environmental challenge we see, APCC has a program or initiative that offers the hope of progress. From land preservation, to wetland restoration, to water quality improvement projects, and to promoting expanded use of native plants, APCC is active on many fronts trying to make our little peninsula a better place.
Being present in so many arenas is necessary, but it is expensive. That is where you come in. Your generosity allows us to be present wherever we are needed, and to bring both expertise and passion to the table in defense of Cape Cod. A successful Summer Appeal provides the resources to deal not only with the issues we planned on, but also the inevitable unexpected ones that always emerge during the year.
I know I am interrupting the best time of the year when many of you are ready to unplug and enjoy the best of what the Cape has to offer. That said, there is no better time than when the Cape is at its best to ask you to invest in its future.
Before venturing out to enjoy your day, please click here or use the remit envelope in the appeal letter that recently came in the mail. Thank you.
