The warm sunny days of late have provided the opportunity to get back to the garden, explore trails, get boats in the water and just be outside. For me the better weather and the arrival of migratory fish provide an opportunity to escape to the water and take a breath. Saturday’s pleasure was finding bass in the rips of Nantucket Sound and then Sunday on foot on the flats of the bay (sorry, that’s all you get for locational information). The feel of the hard sand underfoot and the cooling water did much to wash away the scuff marks from a sometimes trying winter and early spring.

The point here is not to tell you to go fishing. Rather, I am encouraging everyone to pause and do the thing, whatever it is, that both connects you to the Cape and motivates you to work to preserve the environment. It is easy to get consumed by the struggle and to not make the time to enjoy what you value. The lady slippers in the wooded landscape are spectacular but show only briefly. Their season passes quickly, and you can miss out if you don’t make the time to walk the woods to find them. The same is true of the herring runs, the rich green of the early leaves, the clarity of cool spring waters, uncrowded beaches and the list goes on. It all passes by so fast that you can miss them. We all need the time to recharge and reflect, so make the time to get outside. You will feel better for it, and you will be reenergized to help preserve and protect this wonderful place we all share.
