So often when I look out my window, I am struck by the beauty of Ashumet Pond and feel compelled to take a photograph. I’m not a professional photographer, but sometimes I am able to capture the magic, and that is exciting! In this photo of Ashumet Pond after a light January snow, all in white, awash in clean, clear shades of blue and purple, and reflecting the purples and pinks of the sky, everything seems to come together like a work of art, one worth preserving.

My husband’s parents and grandparents purchased a tiny cottage on the pond in 1967. Raising our children on Ashumet every summer helped them to learn and to appreciate the beauty and balance of nature. Observing and interacting respectfully with peepers, turtles, ducks and geese and their offspring, and swimming in the refreshing cool of the clear pond water has been an important part of their development, and what brings them back to Ashumet every year. Our family is big time supporters of all efforts to keep Ashumet
healthy, and are reminded of the reason why every time we look out the window.

Pond Stories are a collection of writings from Cape Codders and visitors who love the 1000 local ponds that dot the Cape. We hope this collection of stories, that are as much endearing as they are environmentally aware, will awaken your inner environmentalist to think deeper about our human impacts to these unique bodies of water. Check out these valuable resources to learn more about the current challenges Cape Cod ponds are facing and how you can be a better pond steward in your town.
