What I'm Thinking...

Get Out

by Andrew Gottlieb, Executive Director

I had the pleasure of being on the water east of the Cape this weekend. We came upon a large pod of feeding dolphins and just got to sit and watch them move gracefully through the water chasing bait with sea birds following along for the snack. Notwithstanding seeing plenty of blues, bass, tuna and clouds of bait, the dolphins alone served as a reminder of what a wonderful environment we are surrounded by.

While getting out east of the Cape is not for everyone, there are countless spectacular places across the Cape to visit and enjoy no matter where you live or visit. Take advantage of the lovely weather and get outside. Being outside is good for you, and it will remind you what we are all trying to protect, and why APCC is an important part of keeping Cape Cod the place we all know and love.

Time for Seed Dispersal!

This is Tiller, a chocolate Lab, who likes accompanying his people-mom out and about to botanize and collect seeds on their property.

It is the time of year when common milkweed pods are ripening and the dry fall winds blow, releasing the parachutes of the silky coma attached to each seed that will carry it to another location with the evolutionary hope that it will find a place to germinate.

Only collect on your property or where you have permission of the owner. Take no more than 10 percent of the available seeds. See here for more information on seed collection practices.

For a terrific article about seed dispersal, see the Wild Seed Project in Maine. You will also find information on how to grow native plants from seed.

APCC's Cyanobacteria Monitoring Program works because of the many pond group volunteers. Thank you!

Drought for the landscape was incredibly severe this past summer, like none in recent memory. So we learn, we try to learn to adapt with our plant choices, and land care practices to conserve water, protect the soils, and support our pollinators and local food webs. This video gives a personal introduction to several native plants at Coastal Maine Botanic Garden with Andy Brand, director of horticulture.

Cape Cod is an Artist's Dream

by Peter Gwillim Kreitler

From the light of Provincetown and Wellfleet to the harbors of Chatham and Harwich, photographers of renown like Joel Meyerowitz or lyrical painters like Anne Packard live and work here. Occasionally a surprise occurs when the artist’s work will educate about an important issue. Currently, the Brewster Library hosts artist, Cape Cod born and raised, Suzanna Nickerson’s Crosby Beach Trash Collage exhibit. Powerful in their simplicity of message and with a complexity of design, the 35 pieces consist of found objects numbering from 300 to 3,000 per collage. Suzanna handpicked the ‘wash ashore’ objects off Crosby beach from 2017-2022.

In her own words she commented: ‘I guess my mission is to educate people about what we are doing to the beaches of the world. I have created a colorful way to look at something that is very, very tragic.’

The art is worth the visit. The show will be on display through the end of October, and the message will last forever. Her final thought was ‘reduce the use of plastics now; just take a look at what came from one beach alone.’
