Stormwater Management in Three Bays to Improve Water Quality
APCC’s Restoration Coordination Center was awarded $472,574 by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Southeast New England Program for stormwater management to improve water quality in the Three Bays. This three-year project will be completed as a collaborative effort by APCC, Barnstable Department of Public Works, Horsley Witten Group, and Three Bays Preservation. The Restoration Coordination Center is managing the project, organizing and conducting outreach activities, coordinating the project team, and tracking project progress and success.
The Three Bays watershed is severely degraded by nitrogen and bacteria resulting in poor water quality, impaired habitat, and closures of beaches and shellfish areas. Stormwater runoff and fertilizer use contribute over 23% of the nitrogen entering the bays resulting in algal blooms, fish kills, and bacteria contamination that regularly impacts fishermen and beachgoers. Through this project, locations for stormwater improvements will be identified and prioritized for the town and at least two of the top priority sites will be addressed through installation of “green” technology to treat and remove pollution from runoff before the water reaches the bays.
Throughout the project there will be multiple opportunities for the public to get involved to learn more about the impacts of stormwater on water quality in the bays, help with demonstration projects, monitoring and maintenance, and provide input into the project.

Guided Walking Tour of Stormwater Installations
Cotuit Village – Friday, May 5th at 2pm
Pre-registration for the guided walking tour is strongly encouraged. We will be meeting outside the Cotuit library by the town green at 2pm and continuing together walking from site to site. If using public parking please abide by posted signs and restrictions. Event will occur rain or shine unless extreme downpour or lightning. A little bit of rain will allow us to see and learn more about runoff. Bring an umbrella and rain coat to keep dry. If extreme weather requires the event to be canceled or post-posed we will notify the group by email.
Rain Garden Workshop an d Installation
Osterville Village Library, 43 Wianno Avenue – Thursday, June 15th, from 9 - 11 AM
Pre-registration for the workshop is required. No charge. Limit of 15 people max to assist with planting and installation due to space constraints. Please bring your own gardening gloves and favorite hand tool for the planting. While space is limited we welcome everyone to stop by the library during the day to learn more and see the progress as the rain garden goes in.
